How easy is it to get a work permit for Japan?
I'd like to take a year out after uni and spend a few months in Japan, but I'd probably need to work there to get enough money to stay. I'm teaching myself the language and hope to be semi-proficient by the time I'd be going (at least in speech- the kanji are a bit much to learn all of them!)
That aside, it's something I've wanted to do for years and years. I've looked at Daiwa and Jet schemes, but they seem a bit too prescribed for my taste and also a bit too long- I really don't want to stay longer than 6 months for personal reasons.
I've heard that they are extremely strict in Japan about letting gaikokujin in to work, and you have to carry alien cards etc etc. So would it be possible for me to get, say, a 6 month work visa (just to do waitressing or shop work or whatever, although I am trained as a graphic designer)? If so, how would I go about applying for it?

No. Working visa for Japan is issued for a job which requires special skill like English teacher. No visa for waiter or something. And working visa is usually 1 or 3 years. No 6 month visa.
If you found a job like English teacher, you will get a working visa.
Or if you are from certain countries, you can apply for working holiday visa.
